#1 Learn your Landscape!

It may sound obvious but it’s actually a really good idea to learn about the location of your landscape shoot. Otherwise, you can end up aimlessly wandering around unable to find a good shot and quickly become disheartened.

Top Tip: Look the location up on sites such as Flickr, Google images, and 500px to get inspired!

#2 Keep it Lit!

Perhaps, even more important than knowing the location is to know your light!

Going when the sun is directly overhead can make it difficult to get a good landscape shot. It changes quickly from being too bright and can cast awkward shadows. This can create pictures with little depth and texture. It’s best to go during the golden hours of the morning and evening where the angle of light is more dispersed and we get those lovely landscape shots full of depth and texture!

#3 Composition is King!

Like two peas in a pod, just as you need good lighting it’s also important to have strong composition.

Remember simple is best, so pick what you want your focal point to be and then see what other elements you want to include in the frame that’ll add depth and dimension to your landscape.

Also consider putting some rules of composition like the rule of thirds, rule of odds, and leading lines to good use!

#4 Don’t Trip... Bring a Tripod!

Honestly, the tripod can be your best friend for taking landscape shots. It helps steady your camera (so no blurry pics!) which, is perfect in low-light situations as you can lower the shutter speed without losing out on ISO! Also, you can use your tripod to play with angles in order to get some really interesting landscape pics.

Top Tip: Bring a tripod with spiked feet and rubber overshoes so it’s easier to set up on uneven ground!
